How to Care for Your Wooden Charcuterie & Serving Boards

How to Care for Your Wooden Charcuterie & Serving Boards

A high-quality wooden board is more than just a serving piece. It is a long-term investment. With the right care, it can last for years while maintaining its rich color and natural beauty.

1. How to Clean Your Board

After each use, clean your board properly to prevent stains and odors.

  • Wipe off food residue with a soft cloth or paper towel
  • Wash gently with warm water and mild dish soap
  • Do not soak the board in water
  • Dry immediately with a clean towel

Avoid putting your board in the dishwasher. Excess water and heat can cause cracking and warping.

2. Deep Cleaning (For Odors and Stains)

If your board starts to absorb smells or stains:

  • Sprinkle coarse salt over the surface
  • Rub with half a lemon
  • Let it sit for a few minutes
  • Wipe clean and dry thoroughly

This helps remove odors and naturally refresh the wood.

3. How to Maintain the Shine

To keep your board looking rich and vibrant:

  • Apply food-safe mineral oil or board oil
  • Use a soft cloth to spread the oil evenly
  • Let it absorb for several hours or overnight
  • Wipe off any excess

Do this every 2 to 4 weeks depending on use.

4. Prevent Drying and Cracking

Wood naturally reacts to its environment. To avoid damage:

  • Keep your board away from direct heat or sunlight
  • Do not leave it wet for long periods
  • Store it in a dry, ventilated area

Regular oiling is the best way to prevent cracks.

5. Using Your Board the Right Way

  • Use one side for serving and the other for light cutting if needed
  • Avoid heavy chopping that can damage the surface
  • Lift the board instead of dragging it across surfaces

6. Long-Term Care Tip

Over time, your board will develop a deeper tone and character. This is part of the beauty of natural wood. Proper care enhances this aging process and keeps the board looking premium.

Taking care of your board is simple. Clean it properly, keep it dry, and oil it regularly. That is all it takes to keep it looking beautiful for years.
